WSAA’s Water Efficiency ‘not-for’profit’- The Water Conservancy - is currently delivering its water efficiency incursion for Primary Schools across SE Queensland and NSW.

For the third year running, students on the Sunshine Coast are benefitting from the live, in-school theatre, water education show - ‘Walter Smart and Friends’. In partnership with Gibber Educational and Unitywater, ‘Walter Smart’ has successfully engaged children about how they use water and how they can waste less whilst promoting local initiatives like Unitywater’s Local Water legends.

From 25 May until 9 June, Primary schools across the Sunshine Coast will enjoy Walter Smart and Friends, funded by Unitywater. From 12 June, the interactive pantomime style show heads south to Dubbo, NSW funded by local water utility, Dubbo Regional Council.

Walter Smart and Friends was established in 2020 and despite the pandemic has been delivered multiple times since then across Tasmania, NSW and SE Queensland.

Walter Smart and Friends comprises an innovative, fun, educational pantomime style performance and an interactive follow-on workshop. It includes original music and songs, comedy, and multimedia to captivate primary students and reinforce key water efficiency messages.

With an increased knowledge and raised awareness of all the easy ways they can use water wisely, the program leaves primary students with a positive can-do attitude, motivated to make changes to how they use water themselves. As well as being inspired to tell their family and friends all the simple ways they too can use water smartly.

From an education perspective, the script is closely linked to the Australian curriculum for science and HASS, human arts and social science, and links perfectly with the emphasis on sustainability as a priority for study across all learning areas and subjects. The performance is followed up by a workshop, which is designed specifically to test students' knowledge of what they've learned during the performance.

Through Walter Smart the children become so excited about the water cycle and conservation, and empowered to use what they need and never waste it. They take their learnings home and pass on some good water saving reminders to their parents, carers and friends.

“I found the whole presentation highly educational and entertaining. The right amount of information provided and then reinforced with character portrayals. Loved it! Please email for a return show in 2022.” YR 4 Teacher Currimundi State School

“I would love to have this incursion again. And I hope schools would love to have this performance. Thank You for the water wise pantomime. It was very good!” YR 4 Student Kallangur State School
